MRSEA Elections

Election Process

The MRSEA document regarding Standing Committees states: "The Nominating Committee should identify qualified retirees interested in serving on the Board of Directors, and make recommendations for a slate of officers to the Board of Directors and the Association's Membership for election at the Association's Annual Meeting." Therefore, the following Nominating Procedure is set forth.
  1. Each fall, the Nominating Committee will poll Board members whose terms end the following May asking whether that Board member wishes to run for another term. Board members will respond to the best of their ability given the time element.
  2. The Committee will develop an announcement for the Winter Newsletter. The announcement will list the Board members whose three-year terms will be ending and designate those who wish to run for re-election for another term. The announcement will request that persons interested in running for election to the Board at the May annual meeting and wish to seek endorsement for the Board, should submit a letter of interest to the Committee. This letter of interest should include a short statement of 100 words or less regarding the candidate's work history, skills the candidate would bring to the position, and things the candidate would like to accomplish. The announcement will include a closing date.
  3. After the closing date, the Committee will review the letters of interest and names of other potential candidates. The Committee will consider, when possible, each candidate's expertise, geographic representation and other qualities which would support the mission of the Board. The Committee will recommend a slate of nominees to the Board for their endorsement. The names of all candidates receiving Board endorsement will be placed on the ballot. The Committee will notify the candidates of the Board's decision to endorse or not endorse each candidate. Candidates who are note endorsed by the Board will be given the opportunity to have their name placed on the ballot. The Committee will write an article for the newsletter summarizing the nominating procedure and listing the candidates for election at the May meeting.
  4. Election of Board members will be held at annual May meeting. The terms of the elected Board members will begin upon election and end May of the year their term ends.
  5. The election process at the annual meeting in May will be as follows. The Board endorsed candidates will be introduced and requested to make a short statement regarding their work history and wishes to serve on the Board. Nominations for any other candidate(s) will be accepted from the floor. All persons nominated from the floor and any candidates not endorsed by the Board will have the opportunity to make a short statement regarding their work history and wishes to serve on the Board. Any person nominated from the floor that is not present at the meeting must provide a written statement assuring that they do wish to serve as a Board member. This statement will be read to the members.
  6. Preprinted ballots will list all candidates who have applied and requested that their name be placed on the ballot. Board endorsed and incumbent Board members will be identified with an asterisk. Ballots will be distributed and members will be asked to write in the name of the person(s) nominated from the floor. Each member will have one vote for each vacant position. Members will select the instructed number of candidates with a check or circle the name. The ballots will be collected and counted. Any ballot with more than the correct number of selections will be void. Each candidate must receive a majority of the vote to be elected.
  7. The Committee and the Business Manager will conduct an orientation process for each new Board member.
  8. The Board will have authority to hold vacant or appoint a new temporary Board member should a position become vacant mid term. This person will serve until the expiration date of that position at which time the person may decide to run for election.
